Student coffee drinking etc

Hi there, I'm looking for some help. I'm a teacher and next week it's my turn to do an assembly for Upper sixth and I thought I would show them how to make a latte with an aeropress and a milk frother. I wanted to give them some costing comparisons to go with it but a quick Google doesn't turn anything up so I wondered if anyone knew the savings to be made before I do the maths?

I'd also like to suggest a few other ways to tackle expensive habits students are supposed to have...aside from growing your own avocados, what else might I add?

(Mods, I cross posted this in the student forum too, not sure if that's OK but I thought it would get a different audience.)

    Hello

Re: Costings it depends on your coffee. I have a Nespresso machine but don't use their pods. My " posh" coffee costs me about 17p a pod. 5p for the milk for the frother. Even including the electricity and water ( I'm metered) it must come in at less than 30p. Versus, what, £2.50 for a costa Starbucks cheapest option? A place to begin with Costings.

Could possibly show them how to grow herbs, chillies, cut and come again lettuce, tomatoes. I'm less sure about avocados. If I was working with my U6, id help them learn to manage money. But a single assembly won't do that!!

    Good luck

What a good idea. Does it have to be an aeropress as the initial outlay can be quite expensive? I bought a small one mug cafetiere for a couple of £ and I reckon each cup costs about 10-15p to make. My frother was £1 + battery from a poundshop. Thermal travel cups can quite often be picked up as freebies at recruitment days for college/uni etc.:)
Re other habits - I'd say buying lunch might be one so some ideas to replicate deli favourites could be an idea. Yes it might still be avocado etc. so still "in vogue but still a substantial saving, There's more to lunch than sandwiches, a food flask opens up lots of possibilities.
  • Cornflakes? I remember having hot water with sugar that I'd pinched from the refectory in place of meals.

This site says Aeropress uses 4x as much coffee as a cafetière, and I'm sure you could find a cafetière in a charity shop for less than a new Aeropress.

    If they're over 18, home brewing/winemaking.

The Aeroprss instructions basic recipe is 17.5 grams of coffee though as above you can use double for a concentrated brew as you might want for cafe-latte. Cheaper coffees are available but Aldi's Single Origin Ethiopian is a decent ready-ground at £1.99 for 200g.

So using that, an aeropress coffee would cost around 17.5p to 35p plus milk.

I'd be pointing the to GM's guidance on renting. In my experience students (and their deposits) are easy meat for unscrupulous landlords.

Definitely show them the maths for packing a lunch, rather than buying it in a canteen/cafe (we used to give our daughter £5 a week to make her lunches, and she would make roast chicken drumsticks/quiche/sandwiches, she'd have Aldi super 6 fruit and yogurts).
  • I work with only slightly younger ones, and there is only one that I know of that drinks coffee of any kind - most don't even like the smell.

Why not teach them how to froth warm milk by hand for hot chocolate instead? Include non dairy milk (Oatley Barista is good for that). All they have to do is put warm milk in a sealed container with plenty of space in it, then shake. No gadgets required.

  • Tell them how easy and cheap it is to make home-made pizza?
Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.
  • Not to be a coffee snob, but a brewed coffee with hot milk is a misto, not a latte. Former barista here - to truly create a 'Starbucks' experience at home, you need hundreds of pounds worth of equipment and a fair amount of skill. Plenty of 17-18 year old know their coffee inside out, so be sure to point out that it's similar to a latte, not a latte itself!
