If your current contract is only 6 months then I wouldn't expect it to be a surprise to your current employer that you are starting to look for something else- it could take at least the remaining 4 months to find something suitable. I would just apply as normal and tell them if you get an offer or if references need to be taken up earlier.

I recently left a permanent LA job for a fixed term contract. I hated my last job to the point it was making me ill. If done for well-being reasons or to learn new skills to get a foot up the ladder I don't see why that's foolish?.

Considering the context of the OP, I am surprised you don't see why it's foolish. Maybe it's just me (and yes, my substantive post is not where I want to be) but to leave a permanent post - where you have rights and pensions and a degree of security for a fixed term is dangerous. Once that fixed term has ended you're likely to be unemployed - and that's no fun. The security that working within an LA used to engender is just not there anymore. For me, it's not a risk I'd take.
