No pension contributions in the first month of employment with new employer?

I recently started a new job where the employer pays 1.5% in to my pension for every 1% that I pay in - up to 5% (so my employer will pay in 7.5% if I pay in the maximum 5%).

When I received my payslip for my first month of employment no deductions had been made for either employer or employee pension contributions. I queried this, and was told that HMRC rules require elections to be made in the month prior to the month in which deductions are made (not only for pensions, but for any benefit).

I can't find any reference to this HMRC rule, and I've certainly never had an employer fail to pay pension contributions in the first month of a new job. Does anyone else have experience of this, or are able to point me in the direction of the HMRC rules that confirm this?

I don't know about HMRC rules, but a company I've just joined enroll you on the following month of joining - at least in my case as I joined mid-month.

I had the same. I joined my company on the 8th Jan and I was enrolled into the company pension from the 1st Feb
