Eon 'smart meter' letter

My 91 year old mother received a letter from Eon, informing her that her meter needed replacing, it would be a smart meter & instructing her to make an appointment for fitting, blah blah blah.

The letter is very forceful & she had not spotted that buried in the text she could call xxx telephone number if she did not want a smart meter.

She's decided she's not going to co-operate, isn't going to call them to arrange any meter change, let alone have a smart meter. In short, do nothing. We're both wondering if she actually does need a meter change, or whether this is just Eon's way of getting as many smart meters in as possible.

Would it be better if I could persuade her to authorised them to speak to me, I don't want her given the 'hard sell' for a smart meter she doesn't want, nor do I want them slyly fitting one because she's old.

We haven't had any of this with our own supplier, EDF.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

    Good morning SevenOfNine,

There have been quite a few threads about this on here and Malc has passed lots of feedback on to the managers here about the way the letters are worded and it has been changed. Although further feedback is welcome.

If your mother would prefer not to have a smart meter, she doesn't have to, it may be best to let us know this though as she might still get letters.

If you would like to speak to us on your mother’s behalf, there is a letter of authority on the website that you can fill out and send to us, we'll then update the details to say we can discuss the account in full with yourself.

I'm sorry the letter has read that way and we can't just fit a meter, we have to arrange it properly with the account holder.

I hope this helps a little.

  • Have a look at her meters. If she has an old gas meter which reads in cubic feet ( 5 or 6 numbers ) it is most likely at the end of its approx 25 years life. if the gas meter is a metric meter ( 8 numbers ) then it definitely does nt need changing for at least another 8 years.
Old electric meters despite being very easy to read and very reliable compared to the nasty cheap digital ones probably do need to be changed .Does nt have to be a smart meter and Eon will fit a dumb meter.

Bear in mind that if she can read her meters now it is extremely unlikely that she will be able to read the smart meters.
