How do I go about finding a good independent financial adviser and how much do they charge and when they charge etc.

Brokers are not allowed to tout for business on here.

Best things is to ask family and friends if they can recommend someone local.

One thing to bare in mind is that financial advisors usually do pensions/investments/protection where as Mortgage advisors will usually do Mortgages/Protection although you may find a firm or advisor who does both.

My understanding is that financial advisors charge a fee of around 1-2% of the investment amount on an annual basis.

A mortgage advisor may charge a fee which could be upfront or on completion or anywhere in between, not all mortgage advisors charge. But I would expect most mortgage brokers for an average case to call somewhere in between £250-600.
