Information for tax return

My brother in law needs to do his tax return for 2017/2018. He retired in July 2017 and has mislaid his P45 which give information of what he earned in the 4 months before he retired.

Where would it be possible to get the information on what he earned and what tax he paid for those 4 months ?

Would it be Ok to put in a provisional figure based on his earnings from the previous tax year pro rata if he cant source the information in time. He was in the same job at the same salary.

Any help would be appreciated as the tax submission deadline is approaching and its all a bit last minute

Anne
PS hope this is in the right forum.

The submission deadline isn't for quite a while - 31st January. If he can't find his P45 then he can use the year to date figures from his final pay slip as they will be the same. His former employer should be able to give him the figures if he has mislaid his pay slips too.
  • Yep, a second vote here - the deadline is 31/1/19 if he does his tax return online. And by the way he will need logins in order to do this. If it his first online tax return he should contact HMRC now(ish) to ask them to send a login for the self assessment site - I have a user ID and password supplied by them. There also used to be a thing called a UTR - I'm not sure whether these are still needed or not. Just ask HMRC for everything you will need!

(It used to take them at least a fortnight to send this stuff, so really, do it ASAP.)

PS And get that tax return in by mid Jan, just in case there are any problems. HMRC are never that helpful towards the end of Jan, as they are overwhelmed with last minute submissions and questions.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
