My son is applying for a temp Xmas job at Tesco where they do a telephone interview and a face to face interview and a group exercise I think. He’s never had a job or an interview. I’d like to help him prepare. What are they likely to ask him in the telephone interview and the face to face interview? Thanks for any help as it’s been a long time since I went for a job interview.

Usually they will ask why he wants to work there, why this job and what can he bring to the job, usually followed by what would he do in some common situations - dealing with awkward customers, a malfunctioning till with a queue a mile long, somebody's fell over the pallet of beans some prat left in the middle of aisle 4 what do you do, etc.

I interviewed for one of these positions as a 2nd job on the side.

    It was fairly straightforward:

    - A few competency questions on the phone (tell me a time you provided good customer service, tell me a time when you handled a difficult situation etc). Before you ask, no I don't remember the questions and no I won't list more (google is your friend in that respect :) )

    - Face to face interview was more them telling me about the role and the core duties. A small amount of talking about similar competencies to the ones above.

    - Task was spending about 15 mins stocking a shelf. Optional but it may help your son to have a quick look round the shelves at what items they stock etc as it gets quite difficult when you are trying to find, for example, a specific beans with sausages variety in a sea of similar-looking tins (and the normal beans ones looking identical).

But I suspect that mine was a bit more ad-hoc as only two of us showed up for the interview, so your son's may be a bit more intensive/involved.
