Thanks but I'm sure that would mean registering onto another site and a different forum, I'd much rather stay here at MSE as I'm sure there are plenty of guys who could help me out. Truth is I'm not that well up when it comes to techie stuff so my problem is probably straight forward to lots of people on this site, I just need advice on how to get my internet connection from my slow P.C. to my new laptop. I have a speedtouch adsl modem at the moment but want to use my wireless router, I have wires and cables all over the table and don't know where to put them.

If you look at the stickies you will find this thread which mat be of assistance.

Also if the above thread doesn't sort you out, post full details of what router you have, what modem (if seperate to the router), what ISP. The more info you provide the easier it is for people to help. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
After trying to install my belkin the 'proper' way usng the instructions (which didn't work) I ended up doing it manually and by memory from my old router, took 5 minutes and worked a treat!
Ah, a speedtouch adsl. Are you sure this is compatible with the router as our speedtouch wasn't and we had to get a new router, it was a dsl connection or something (basically it had the wrong ports on to fit the phone line into)Fr. Stack: While you were out, I got the keys to your car. And drove it into a big wall. And if you don't like it, tough. I've had my fun, and that's all that matters.0 -

I've never installed a router before so just tried to follw instructions, I think the problem is that the laptop has never had a internet connection before as its new and the router can't detect any setting as to where to connect to.
Also why does the speedtouch adsl have to be compatible with the router, I thought I was replacing the speedtouch with the wireless router but your quote implies that they are both to be used together

have u made sure ur laptop has a wireless card in it??
If so it maybe needs to be switched on..hubby said ..u press FN and then F2 at same time.
try it0 -
Tried pressing FN and F2 but nothing happens, when I turn on the laptop and the desktop first appears a message pops up saying
HP WIRELESS ASSISTANT
WLAN ON
BLUETOOTH ON0 -
Try taking the ethernet cable (This is the cable that you are using to connect to your desktop PC) and plugging it into the laptop so that it recognises the connection, then unplug it and try to connect.
HTH though I'm not familiar with that particular router. It's one of those things that sounds more complicated than it is to explain eg over the phone or on a forum - if you have any technically-minded friends might they help out? Even if not, sometimes 2 brains work better than 1, and you have to work very hard to break these things
Your local independent PC shop might do call-outs to set up wireless networks (internet) at a much cheaper price than the tech guys.I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0 -
I tried connecting the ethernet cable into the laptop and it recognised the modem but then asked me to insert the disk that came with the modem, I know I don't have this as it was done by an old neighbour and he never left me anything to keep.0

Did you plug the ethernet cable into the router, or the modem? Routers don't need drivers.
Wire up the router, plug ethernet cable between router and pc, using one of the 4 lan ports on the router
start, run
cmd
Assuming XP?
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
