Tax Confusion around benefits

I noticed that my tax code changed in my September salary as I took home less than I normally do.
I queried this with the HMRC yesterday who claimed it was because they had not recognised my Employment benefits (usual stuff) in the first 5 months of the year.
I raised this with my employer who said it was the employees' responsibility to declare work-based benefits and otherwise these would be accounted for when they submitted the P11D.
Now I'm a bit confused because I've never declared my benefits (leaving this to the P11D process I presume) and have never been told I've underpaid tax.
Am I missing a trick here or does this sound fairly normal?
My tax code changed to cover an adjustment to pay the delta (£220) over the next 5-6 months.
P.S I wasn't sure which forum to post this in.

Probably better in the Cutting Tax board, but adjusting tax code to account for likely P11D benefits is perfectly normal, and I'm surprised it's never happened before if you have had such benefits in previous years. It is, however, worth checking that the figures on the P2 (or possibly P800) are correct and that the recalculated tax code is valid.0
