PAYF and REAL JUNK FOOD PROJECT

Options
Not sure if this post is in the right place......here goes.
A "payf' store has been operating in my local area but closed down last week.
PAYF stands for Pay As You Feel. It was run by volunteers but premises proved to be unsuitable and , as yet, no new venue. Unsold fresh food was collected from large supermarket each evening and offered to any member of the public to help themselves to fruit, veg, bread etc for a donation.....payf'.
Perhaps folk could post if something similar runs in their area. The idea is to stop food wastage. There are also cafes where food is served as soup and snacks. Hope this makes sense.

We have a community fridge in Godalming that has food donated from local supermarkets.

    I agree.

The sad thing about it though is that enterprising and caring individuals are harnessing the Green debate to help feed those who are hungry. It's in the same vein as food banks and soup kitchens.

I'm not saying it isn't a good idea but it's a disgrace IMO that we have such polarisation in society and the cynic in me says that many companies recognise it as a good PR move.

But our payf' had a sign outside.....everyone welcome. Absolutely anyone could take stuff from there with just a monetary donation. It was not for the needy etc , I would take a few carrots, onions etc. Sometimes put bread in the freezer. A friend of mine is on her own and these quantities were ideal for her. And there was a social side to it too,, my friend would sit and chat, one of the volunteers sat and knitted. I'm really hoping it returns . Thought I would try and raise awareness as it's such a good idea.

Yes, list is useful, that's what I hoped someone would post. Sadly I'm in N.Wales and looking at the list there's only 1in the whole of Wales. Any other local schemes running?

OK so it's not just for the needy. I can see that some would find small quantities useful and donate a little as if they were paying for YS stuff in the supermarket.

What happens to the money raised? Is that for premises costs?

I was told money is used to cover overheads such as premises and fuel cost for food pick up.
