We have halifax near us and a traditional bike shop, any advice about what to buy?
He can cycle a bit but not very good for his age.

Not really sure, but avoid any bike with rear suspension (assuming you're spending less than £1000 or so, and the boy won't be downhill racing).
Rear-suspension is heavy, inefficient, and not a benefit in most cases.0
