UTR and First time registration for Self Assessment

Options
I already have a peronal tax account with a government gateway id. I had a one off capital gain in year 2017-18 and am trying to register for Self Assessment by the deadline, 5th October.

I filled out the online application for a UTR today, but since discovered this takes 10 working days to be generated and delivered by post, despite already having an online account.

Q: Do I need to be in possession of the UTR by the 5th or is my application today suffice to meet the deadline?

Also, the government page talks about an access code also to be sent by post, is this correct? I have to be in possession of the UTR then they will sent an access code by post, taking a further 10 working days? Surely, I would have the option of receiving the access code via my mobile, as they did when I set up the my online Personal Tax Account.

As of today, 30 September, is it too late to set up an online SA account, since the UTR and access code is being set by post, despite me already having an online Personal Tax account?

You are only required to register (Notify Liability) by 5 October and you seem to have already done that.
HMRC should then issue a Return or Notice to File and you will then have until 31 January to submit your Tax Return and pay the tax due.
At the moment you have plenty of time but once you have got your UTR and access code I would suggest that you get on with completing your Return. You are quite likely to hit a few snags on your first Return and the HMRC system tends to get overloaded in January and this forum gets quite busy too.

Thank you Jimmo for the advice. HMRC sent 2 letters over the following 2 weeks with one containing the elusive UTR- thanks for the reassurance
