Wescot Paypal debt collection

HI all,
So a few months back I sold an item online through PayPal. I received the payment and posted the item to the seller.
Almost a month later, I got an email from PayPal stating that the seller has opened a case for unauthorized payment. A day after that without providing any evidence, PayPal ruled in my favour and closed the case. I just decided to close my PayPal account cause I thought the whole thing was very dodgy. However despite my account being closed, around a month after the incident, I received around an email from papal saying that the buyer has requested a chargeback through his bank so my account is in negaive and I have to pay the money back plus the chargeback fee.
I did not intend to return the money since this was nothing to do with me and it was paypal's issue.
Unfortunately, I received a text from Wescot yesterday asking to call them asap for my case.
After a little bit of search, I found out that it is most likely paypal asking for their money?
I am not sure what should I do now? the buyer is not responding to my messages.,
So probably I suspect it was a fraud! I thought maybe someone here would be able to give me advice on this.
Thanks

Hi,
Dealing with PayPal issues such as this can be a complete nightmare for a seller, as they tend to always come down on the side of the buyer in any dispute, it is surprisingly easy to get away with fraud using PayPal, as you have discovered.
Did the buyer receive the item you sent ?, are they willing to return it ?
Wescot are a debt collection agency who just manage clients accounts in situations where they believe a debt is due, all you can really do is write or email PayPal, explain your side of the story, and that you will not be paying, CC a copy to Wescot as well.
Ultimately that's about all you can do, should PayPal choose to start a court claim, then you would have to defend it on the grounds previously given.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Actually PayPal would find for the seller automatically on this if OP invoked their seller protection. To have seller protection against a claim of unauthorised use the seller has to show that they followed PayPal requirements to ship to the address given by PayPal within 7 days of payment , all PayPal need is a scan and upload of the proof of postage.
Ignoring the claim merely puts the PayPal account into negative balance which they will chase a seller for.
There is a sticky thread about postage on the eBay board which might be useful.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
