Getting the smell of cat pee out of sofa cushions

My cat peed on the fabric sofa. The covers are not removable. It soaked right through into the cushion. I have tried laundry detergent and warm water, wiping it down then spraying simple solution on it but it still smells! What else can I try?

good luck. we use dettol spray and febreze. In combination they work

be careful if your cat is older rather than just a kitten having an accident this might be the start of an ongoing problem, so you either need to get very good at spotting when your catt wants to go, or put down a litter tray and be prepared for a long haul.

Vinegar can help neutralise the smell but test first in a hidden bit to check it doesn't stain the fabric. If ok apply fairly liberally and leave to dry. The vinegar smell will go in a few days. Afterwards zoflora & febreeze as suggested are fab. I had a very elderly (and very leaky) pooch who did like a snooze on the couch, he was too old & demented to banish so I ended up covering my sofas with cot mattress protectors and throws which I could wash as needed. If you have an old puss could be worth considering.

First, get rid of the cat.

  • Use biological washing liquid diluted with a bit of water. The cheap stuff is fine. Give it a good wash and let dry. Will take the smell away.
  • Hi
I bought bio-k20 from Taylor McClure, it it brilliant stuff, sometimes it smells on first day, then it's gone, I use it in a vaxon my carpets, good luck .
  • Use baby sterilizing tablet, dissolve 1 tablet in water, pour it on the stain, wait for a few minutes and soak it up with kitchen towel,
Do a patch test just in case! I use this method for 20+ years and it's always works! It removes all smells!

    Good luck!
  • Unfortunately any use of bleach or sterilising tablets turn my cats into odd balls, they act like they're on catnip, rubbing themselves all over it.
  • I have a similar problem with a geriatric dog. I bought ‘Simple Solution’ stain + odour remover (Pets at H**e) Very easy, no stain and no odour.

    White vinegar works.

Cat pee is highly alkaline and the acid neutralises it. Some cleaning products are alkaline too (e.g. bleach) which tends to make the smell worse, not better.
