How good and how much protection will a "free" helmet offer your child's head?

The helmet is for 52-57cm. I've just measured my head and it would appear to, easily.

Does "proper" have a specific definition?

Do you really think that a company like Halfords would sell a substandard product that didn't meet whatever British Standards, or its European equivalent, that cycle helmets require, where doing so would risk at least a trading standards investigation, probably an enormous fine and totally ruin their reputation ?

The "free" helmets in question are currently reduced to £5 in store IF you want to purchase one directly, however these are at a "clearance" reduction price and originally cost at least £15 and could have set you back £25

Even the cheapest (originally £15) meets the European Safety Standard EN1078, which covers its use by pedal cyclists, and users of skateboards and roller skates
