The woman who interviewed me after my bankruptcy was adamant that Halifax would close my account. She said they always did.

    ive done most of them...lol
  • Halifax are not B.R friendly at all
  • Yes they will. Halifax treated me like I was a scumbag. Definitely would never ever go near them again even if you paid me.

I’ve somehow managed to get an essential current account with Virgin Money - it has a contactless card and I accrue interest which I must say is amazing.

I was honest and open about my bankruptcy with them from my telephone call to book the appointment. The staff are wonderful and have been very welcoming.

Only problem with virgin is they don’t do mobile banking. You can just check your balance online. Standing orders need to be set up in branch but once they’re set up you can call to transfer money across.

Can recommend Coop for their basic account too.
  • Another confirmation that Virgin will give you a basic account. However, they do not have any internet banking services other than viewing your account, it's a real pain to use if you don't live very close to a branch or work when they are open.
  • Monzo don't even ask - they just do an ID check. And they were happy for my husband to keep his account post bankruptcy. They even sent him a really nice, encouraging message.

I bank with them too - can't recommend them highly enough.
