Fiverr and freelancing sites

Hi all

I'm a digital marketer by trade and have done some freelance work in the past to top up my income. I made around £2000 in 2017 doing simple websites, email and a bit of social media for a couple of clients. I'd like to get back into it but since moving to a new city lack the contacts I had before.

I signed up to Fiverr and will start posting 'gigs' over the weekend, but it looks highly saturated and with loads of sellers from Bangladesh, Philippines etc willing to work for low rates I think I'll struggle to get work there.

Has anyone had any success at this kind of thing lately? I'm not looking for fortunes out of it, just a bit of extra work and the ability to make £200 - £300 a month.

Thanks

You chose a site like Fiverr and want £200 a month? I think given your history it may be possible to get on Toptal but there's also Upwork and Craigslist. Maybe just create a website and contact those clients who have bought from you before.

  • I've been doing some translation jobs on upwork before. I was able to make a couple hundred a month with a few hrs of extra work here and there. If you speak another language or got some other skills its def a great page to earn some extra cash

Is that unrealistic with Fiverr? The $5 pricing system seems to have changed and people are posting jobs up at all sorts of prices now (some admittedly quite low.)

I'll have a look at those other sites then thanks.

Thanks for feedback. Upwork looks possible as they feature copywriting and marketing work (Toptal looks maybe a bit too technical). How long did it take you to start finding work after you got set up on it?
  • I think Fiverr can be a good top up to boost income and iron out quieter times. You shouldn't really consider a platform like that for primary income.

I have experience on freelancer websites, both as a customer and providing a service, and most of the generic ones are now saturated with international "gangs" utilising bots and promising the earth. (unfortunately the big players have swallowed up all the good site IMHO) They simply create a profile with vital keywords, employ someone competent to pass any tests which some sites offer (English to specific test regarding offered services... could be typing, coding etc.) and will utilise bots to auto-bid on projects without reading them first. Their offer is determined by other reputable bids.

The result is mostly seriously undercutting bids (highly rated accounts might go extra high if bids are made from low rated accounts), when you accept, it is just picked up by someone with a laptop who knows how to use Google. They may have no prior experience or knowledge in that area despite reviews and the profile. In most cases the people behind it are guaranteed at least half the value of the projects before providing any of the work. Not sure how much the actual workers receive from it.

This said I have dealt with many intelligent, capable and fluent persons from places such as Brazil, Thailand, India and the Philippines. My only comment is it is hard to start off in a freelancer website in 2018, unless you want to work for nothing to gain a reputation... and probably harder to get someone competent for a project unless it is rather simple in nature and available off the shelf.
