Hi all

I am in the early stages of becoming debt free and have already seemed advice and spent hours searching this wonderful website :-)
On my credit report it says I owe British Gas £160. I tried to pay off the debt today so it would be marked as satisfied on my credit report (I’ve defaulted) however the advisor stated that I cannot pay as the balance is zero and it has been written off.
The default was dated August 2018.

I have calculated that I will be debt free in under 1 year and I want to apply for a mortgage in around 3 years, so this’ll show on my credit report as it’s under 6 years from default, I wanted to satisfy the debt so it’ll look better?

That sounds a bit odd and my guess is that they have sold the debt to a new owner. Hence the debt is written off and balance zero on their systems.The new owner will take over the reporting, keeping the existing default date.

If I'm right, the new owner will write to you soon.

What I would do though is write to BGas at the address on the report to complain that they are not reporting accurately and that you have been told verbally that the balance is zero and it has been written off

Thanks fat belly, I’ll do what you suggest.
They have my previous address so i suppose I best update my address with them as I don’t want another default.
