  • As you have said that your friend wants to leave, getting a settlement agreement with a payment in it (potentially tax free if a severance payment) could be the best option.

    Make sure the settlement agreement includes an agreed reference the employer promises to give to future employers.

    Gross misconduct is pretty serious, and there is nothing in the post which suggests gross misconduct. Bad communication would not be gross misconduct. So your friend could well hold their position on this and engage with the disciplinary process, if their goal is to stay.
