Boyfriends debt

My boyfriend is being the stay at home dad in our family, he got made redundant and couldn’t afford to pay his debts anymore. They are two credit cards. They wouldn’t accept the £5 a month each he offered so have sent it to a debt collectors.

He has zero income. Can’t claim anything because I work and it’s only my income we have.

I refuse to pay his debt since it was all before he met me and why should I. It’s not my debt.. they asked for my income which I refused to give, it’s none of their business what I earn.

EDIT - he literally has no assets either, the car is mine and I can prove I paid for it and the only other thing we have worth taking would be our TV, which again I paid for and can be proven.. so what happens when they get told he has zero income and realise we don’t have anything worth taking?

Hi, you need to provide more information such as how much the debt is have many payments have been missed are you a home owner or rent, who the debt is owed to, has it reached dca enforcment stage etc..........

the more information you can provide the better advice you will get as we need to know the details also
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

    Sorry!

    We aren’t home owners.

The debts are two separate credit cards. The last payments made were 2 months ago when boyfriend informed him he was zero income now as his contributions based job seekers had ended. He was paying £10 a month until then. When he was working he was paying £200 on each a month!

What’s DCA enforcement? He’s just been sent a letter saying the debt has been sold on.

As long as he keeps in contact with whoever is chasing the debts, explaining his circumstances, and that he cannot afford any more than £5, or whatever per month, he will be fine.

They cannot take what he does not have, back up the letter with a copy of his budget.

He sent a copy of the letter from the job Center saying he could no longer claim anything, so they knew he had a zero income but wouldn’t listen.. so have now sold the debt on.

We don’t live a life of luxury, we literally have a tv and my car that’s worth taking. And I paid for those . I’m just worried about keep getting harassed because they don’t seem to accept he has zero income.

It’s normal practice for creditors to sell or assign debts under those circumstances, they simply wash there hands of them, previous advice still stands.

Post back if they don’t get the message.

He would probably qualify for a Debt Relief Order but that might be a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Just be aware of that in case he needs it but it's quite possible that these debts will just go quiet after they have been sold on and worked through their standard letters.

Can't he get evening work in a supermarket or pub.
It seems unfair on you to take all the financial burden
Most couples need 2 incomes to function nowadays

I think you are right to not pay his debts, you don't need to subsidize him

    Good luck

  • It is normal practice to sell debts on if he can't meet payments. He has sent them evidence of his income. Just make sure you are not financially linked - ie no joint accounts. How old is your child/children?

If in the future you decide to get married / get a mortgage together his credit history will impact on your financial future and decisions.

Since he is the stay at home dad couldn't you pay the minimum on his debts and when your child is at school (or eligible for 30 hours childcare) perhaps your partner could pay you back?

It's not uncommon for Barclaycard to refuse installments. It's not personal.

Now that the debts have been assigned/sold he'll be dealing with a new business who may take a different view of the situation since they will have probably paid less than 10% of the book value for them. Barclaycard will have written off their 'loss' against tax so it's a win-win situation for them.

Wait until the new debt owner writes to him and then start again.

There will be letters sent but no bailiffs will call at your home since they'd need to be a CCJ in place before that can happen, and you're a long way off anything like that!

How much are these debts and when did he open the accounts? Was there PPI on either of them?

Keep in touch with the forum if there's a development.
