Reduction in hours

Wonder if someone can help

My original contract states the following
However days and hours of work can be changed at anytime

I was originally employed three days a week and then upped it to four
I had a meeting a couple of weeks ago and was told my days were being cut to two days a week and was also told my contract allows this

Does the paragraph above cover it ? Or does it only cover changes in days and times

Yes, I would say it does. Going from 4 down to 2 days per week is a change isn't it?

Does your contract guarantee a minimum number of hours or you contracted to a certain number of hours?

It has a box that says 0800-1600 Tuesday Thursday & Friday

Yes it is but it doesn't say anything about reduction

If it says that days and hours can be changed, then that would be the starting point. Can you point to anything that says they can't?

It looks as if it's little more than a zero hours contract wrapped up to look pretty. If they can change your hours and days at their convenience you have to question whether you are happy working in that environment. If not, start looking for another job.

I would say it's all down to the interpretation of the terminology.

While you can quite legitimately claim any change is a change, to me, a change would be the same amount of hours but different to to those specified.

So OP has said their contract says, 0800-1600 Tuesday Thursday & Friday, to me a change would be say, 1200-2000 Sat, Sun, Mon.

Less hours is a reduction and their contract does not say it can reduce their hours only change them.

OP, I am no expert of any of these matters, I would suggest you contact your Union, ACAS or an employment Solicitor, as it really does depend on how you interpret the word change and as you can see there are already differing views just on this thread.

Are the only things you would consider a change to be keeping the number of hours worked the same but amending the start and finish times, or altering the days that you work? Seems quite a narrow definition, and it seems you already agreed an increase from 3 to 4 days so I don't see how that is logically different to a reduction.
