While I tend to agree that this proposal opens a whole can of scary scenarios and risks, there is also something philosophically interesting about Government having a minority stake in private business and an interest in ensuring continued business profitability. Perhaps there is a better proposal in here, struggling to get out?

How about a ten-year programme where Corporation Tax was gradually replaced by share purchase/distribution and thereafter Companies that had reached the 10% Government ownership threshold no longer need to pay Corporation tax?

The worker gets some and so does the Govmt to pay for the services we all need and use and which are in a complete mess!

The worker gets up to £10 a week and the government* gets the bulk to unwisely spend on buying even more votes, instead of cutting spending on unnecessary stuff any government wastes taxpayer's money on, and streamlining spending on the important stuff.

    We get it.

    * Of whatever stripe. If (if!) this gets in, I don't see any subsequent Conservative government winding this down again. Far too lucrative.

The concept already exists. It's called Corporation tax.

They're not in a "complete mess". The NHS has been ranked no. 1 in the world again by the Commonwealth fund, see https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/jul/14/nhs-holds-on-to-top-spot-in-healthcare-survey and according to the OECD the UK is one of the highest spenders on education in the world https://data.oecd.org/eduresource/education-spending.htm

Don't believe all the propaganda propagated by the simpletons on tw*tter and the like.

Well, slightly more honest than the previous NuLab regime, with their stealth taxes.

Totally recognise that state intervention is not popular on these forums but when a political thread starts and seeing some of the views expressed I find it hard to avoid my own little contribution. I work in a Govmt dept that was split in two by privatisation. It was an abject disaster and is costing taxpayers huge sums to correct and the work is now being brought back under state control. The idea that state control/intervention is always bad is too simplistic imo.

This country is very divided and there is no consensus as to the way forward. Perhaps the tory party conference next week will prove me wrong;)

So what? Just because there are issues in certain areas, as there will always be in a massive public sector, doesn't mean it's a "complete mess". People will always complain what they have isn't enough. But our public services are far better than most of the world's, even than most rich countries. Look at the stats. Try reading the links I posted above.

I did and noticed we are second to bottom regarding outcomes in the NHS and I wonder if the funding in Education takes account of the increase in class sizes?
I see Northampton Council are bankrupt and in relation to childrens social services:-
