And at least three firms still confiscate 10% of the cash found in lost wallets despite another company recently being forced to scrap the policy after a passenger outcry...

Can see both sides of this argument, although there are some nonsensical parts of certain policies as noted by the MSE editor, that really should just be fixed by the operators (% cash fee, umbrella vs phone etc.). Almost worthy of being a money moral dilemma as I bet people would be very split on the issue!

It costs money to provide a lost property service so what would MSE propose? That we all pay more in the cost of our train tickets?

MSE would probably propose that we get the service for nothing plus a bit of compo for having our feelings hurt that the suggestion to charge had even been made.

What a nonsense, they should all either charge or just dispose of any left property as waste when trains are cleaned.

What next? Have the train companies provide a free bum wiper service in case passengers do not do a proper job themselves.


(I suppose as an alternative the property could all be handed in at a police station nearest the train depot)

No but a seat would be nice occasionally. Perhaps I can start charging them every time I pay for their overpriced ticket and fail to provide one????

A fixed fee that is reflective of the cost to provide the lost property service.

Certainly not rifling through a found wallet and taking out some of the cash - how is that even legal? I'm pretty sure if you did that to a wallet you found on the street it would be classified as theft.

On London Underground the rule is if you find anything you hand it in. Generally if someone pitches up and claims before it's been officially declared "Lost Property" the supervisor may hand it back at no charge, but if it's on the form and in the bag then it has to be claimed from Lost Property Office and a fee paid. I've seen false teeth, crutches, false leg handed in, that's besides hundreds of brollies and mobile phones. Cash is counted and witnessed. Right ot wrong, the rules are there and iff you want lost gear back you pay for it.
