Giving notice - help with holidays/final pay etc?

Hi,

I have been on sick leave for a few months and have decided it would be best for myself and the company I work for to hand my notice in, as I can't guarantee I will be able to return. I don't want to keep messing them about with potential return dates, only to be signed off sick again.

Before I hand in my notice, however, I would like to understand how the final pay / holiday accrual system works, so I know what to expect.

- Is holiday accrued on a monthly basis? For example, I get 25 days + 9 bank holidays paid leave per year (Jan-Dec).
- According to our Workday system, I have a balance of 8 days until the end of the year, or 12 days until the end of October (I think that's because I have 4 days booked at Christmas, so the balance is 12).
- Will I be paid for those 12 days, or will I have used too much holiday so it will be deducted from final pay?

If you have 12 days left them you won't get paid for all of them. Depending on your final work date yoou will get

25+ 9 days BH MINUS what youve taken MINUS what you dont earn from the months you don't work there.

Doing some very very crude mental maths it would seem you will maybe be owed a couple of days holiday when you leave, but not the full 12.

Thanks marliepanda, that makes sense to me. If I've worked out the accrual system correctly, it should be about 3 days I get paid for.
