Job Being Delayed Until Next Year

I currently work in a band 2 admin position in a hospital. I applied for a similar position in a another hospital in May, did a literacy, numeracy and excel test in June, interviewed in July and having completed all the necessary pre-employment checks earlier this week (this was delayed by one of my references being away) I was told I would receive my final offer letter sometime this.

At the test stage we were told the job would start sometime in October, at interview we were told November. I then was told today via voicemail due to a problem with the company providing funding for the study the start has now been delayed until February. I called my manager back and we had brief conversation bit it was very bad line and he wasn't in the office so he asked to contact me tomorrow.

Honestly I'm really upset and annoyed and am not sure how to proceed. I feel I have waited quite some time for this job already and am worried of hanging around until February to be told it's been delayed again. Also while I haven't given my notice my current manager is aware I am leaving (I had to tell her do she could provide a reference) and as she was hiring to replace another member of staff who is leaving she has hired my replacement already. Also one of my reasons for leaving was I do not earn enough - living in London my rent is quite a lot and I have various debts I am trying to pay off. Waiting around would mean 4 more months on a lower income.

My friend suggested seeing, in the circumstances if they can take me on in another role until this one can begin but I have a feeling the will say no. Another has said if it were she would start looking for a job somewhere else because she wouldn't trust them not to delay it again. I really don't know how to proceed. Has anyone else been in a similar situation or have any advice?

This can be quite common with public jobs where jobs rely on funding. They have to get the team together as part of their "applying for the money" process in a lot of cases....

It's what limits the number of people who are in a position to "bother" to apply because, as you've found out, you need "money now/soonest" and they've dragged their feet month after month... many people have seen this in the past so don't bother again.
  • Just keep looking for other work in the interim. Life is to short to over worry, what will be, will be. Anything can happen in a new job, nothing's ever quite guaranteed.

There’s zero chance of that happening and it’ll be seen as an odd thing to ask.

If you've not formally handed your notice in then you still have a job, whether your replacement has been recruited or not.
What do you want to do? Would you prefer to move on from where you are regardless of what happens with the new post? If so start looking now - you might find something better than the one that's been delayed.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

There is absolutely nothing you can do to force the hand of the potential new employer, and to try to do so could simply end with the job offer being withdrawn completely.
As the role appears to depend in part on 3rd party funding there is always the chance that it won't start in February. If it's a job that you really want you probably just need to stick with what you have for now and hope it does happen in February.
