I completed a full-time BA whist working part-time on the run-up to retirement. Since retiring I have completed a full-time MA. Both were in subjects I love but which I would never have studied first-time around (poor job prospects).

I also volunteer one day a week. Really satisfying and another great way to socialise with like-minded people.

I walk loads more now that I have the time to do so and I hitch a ride on any yacht that needs crew at the local sailing club. Most meals are now cooked from scratch and I have refreshed baking and preserving skills. I have taken to beach-combing in a big way and also take a few leisure courses each year. This week I attended the first session of Bridge for Beginners. On Friday the Philosophy course begins.

OH has yet to retire so I am looking forward to sharing more activities with him eventually. In the meantime each year offers lots of opportunities to try new things and revisit activities that were lost due to time pressures when I was working.

House-cleaning is the one 'new thing' I would happily lose permanently from the schedule. Unfortunately I have no justification for the cleaning service now.

As others have mentioned, retirement provides the opportunity to revisit existing loves and to discover new ones.

Not retired yet that's within sight though. Like Spreadsheetman, my current efforts are into a final push to max out savings/ pensions and in my case clear rest of debt, so have not taken any lengthy holidays. We plan to take several long "Gap Year" style holidays while we have the ability and inclination- take 6 months for SE Asia, next one 6 months India etc. On the home front I'm expecting to return to several old hobbies- gardening- a proper makeover instead of the current cut the lawns and hedges, weed the flower beds, do a cookery course, after we've finished our long travels maybe return to dog agility and sheepdog training- current dogs are retired from it and will sadly due to their age now not be around to have many years with us in retirement.

Mrs CRV is planning on upping her hobby time on the Saxophone, dressmaking and breeding seahorses. I'd like to return to my love of classic cars but fear interest in mechanics is greater than ability and don't want to get a money drain.

  • I'm still around 2 yrs away from retiring but already have a list of new and existing things to do when I have more time:

Existing: writing, reading, walking, maintenance on the house and garden
New: learn Welsh if the plan to move to Anglesey happens, do some volunteering, do a tour of Scotland
