If you pay money to your landlord to cover the electricity or gas bills, your landlord is responsible for paying this money to the company who supplies your energy. A supplier can’t chase you over an outstanding debt.0 -

The ‘challenge’ for the OP is to provide proof that there was a formal legally binding arrangement in place and that money changed hands. It saddens me to say this but I fear that the OP may be the victim of an unscrupulous landlady who has given the OP’s name to the supplier as the billpayer; taken cash from her tenants, and then just kept it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi,
I have received a letter from the debt collection organisation Westcot regarding a outstanding balance on my gas account with Npower. However, I have never had any account with them.
The letter states that I owe 320 pounds for supply between January and June 2014. At that time I was renting a room in the address they provided in the letter, however I never had an account with Npower. I used to pay the bills to the landlady in cash.
The letter says that Nopwer could´t resolve this issue with me so they transferred to Westcot. Obviously they could´t resolve this issue because they didn´t have any of my contact details, and to be honest I´m really worried that Westcot got my my new address and phone number.
And also, I wasn´t aware of this as I never had an account with them!
I´m worried about this but I don´t think I should be paying this amount of money as I left the flat and paid what I had to pay to the landlady. Also, it wasn´t me the only person there, there were 2 more people renting other rooms.
I need advice on what to do next. Should I contact them and explain? Should I just leave it? I don´t want this to get worse but I don´t want to pay that money as it´s wrong!
Thank you.
Hi Mlruirod
Thank you for posting, I'm sorry for the letters you've received. I will be happy to take a look at this if you would like to send me an email (using the address from my profile) with the account details.
Thanks

Have you got a tenancy aggreement as it was a house share ? Does it say inclusive of bills .Also are you saying it's your details on the letter and your thinking someone has set an account in your name ? I would not just pay this .what has the landlady said as she was taking money from you for bills ? Please always get a receipt on cash payments and what you are paying for in future .I would take your debt letter to your local citizens advice and explain to them as worrying yourself about this will not help .Obviously if the letter is not addresed to you personally the fact you have lived at the address is not the issue it's the details and who they are chasing for the debt .0
