High blood pressure Meds - side effects!

Just wondered what side effects people here have experienced with prescribed medication?

My Partner was on Bendroflumethiazide - but came off them after affected her kidneys - does help to have regular blood tests.
Then started on Ramopril going from 2.5mg., through 5.00mg., and on to 10mg. They were beneficial to restore the kidney rating.
However, BP was still over 160 - even allowing for 'white coat' syndrome Doctor still wanted it lower.
Hence, also now on Amiodipine 5mg. (Doctor made us aware that 10mg can result in swollen ankle).

OH yes, before that Beta-blockers were tried - but dulled the senses and body too much.

Curious if anybody on anything similar, how are they coping - tiredness, and anyone have disruption to heart rhythm?

  • I am on 5mg Ramopril, I seem to tolerate it quite well.

Is your partner taking 10mg one off or as 2 doses of 5mg?

I ask because Ramopril has a fairly short life, it can lose its effect in 13 hours and diminishes gradually up to then.

I take my single dose mornings as the forthcoming day is when I am most likely to be naturally stressed and have higher BP, so need most protection.

I made the mistake of logging my BP in the evenings when the medicines effect was lowest. (Of course after ingesting it in the morning it takes a while to work too) My evening log seemed to show little effect.

When I started logging during the day time when it was working, my numbers showed a good lowering of BP overall. Different peoples bodies clear drugs out at different speeds.

So is your partner taking 10mg all at once? how long elapsed until they get their BP measured? or if taking 2 x 5mg do they need to space them out more?

Worth getting your own BP machine and getting your doctor to show you how to use it, they can be quite accurate and cheap (arm type, not wrist type) and its better if you can log your BP at the same time during the day when relaxed.

I have high blood pressure, was diagnosed in 2012.

I used to take Amiodipine but had to stop after 6 months after my feet swelled so badly I could barely walk. I switched to Ramopril and Bendroflumethiazide and have even on both ever since. I haven't suffered any noticeable side effects and have regular blood tests and check ups.

I do get tired easily, but I always have before and since my diagnosis and after several doctor visits and tests it's been concluded it's just how I am.

I was going to suggest this. I got a BP machine some years ago and calibrated it with the nurses machine on a regular checkup. My GP suggested measuring it twice a day for 3 weeks to give a much better picture of my BP.
  • Interesting your comment about blood pressure meds and atrial fibrilation.
My OH has been on blood pressure meds for at least 25 years, and he's just recently been diagnosed with AF. I don't think there's a causal link between the meds and the AF - but I do suspect that the stress/anxiety/working too hard that caused the high blood pressure is likely to have also caused the AF.

  • I've been on those meds for 15+ yrs - no side effects :-)
  • Another vote on getting a BP monitor like Omron. Also, I suggest taking CoQ10. It is just a supplement that can improve cardiovascular health.
  • I started out on Amiodipine but I got nervous twitchiness (couldn't stay sat down for more than a few minutes) and a horrible pit of the stomach feeling of dread.

Now on 5mg Ramopril, and not noticed any side effects.

I am on Enalapril, Amlopidine and a diuretic

The first two no side effects but the obvious issue with the diuretic. Not helped by old man's prostate! Up and down during the night, unfortunately
