Tax on money earned abroad and taken to the UK

Options
Hello,

I have spent a few years abroad earning money there, now I am returning to the UK. I will be of pension age and I will start to claim my pension then and I will be taking money I earned abroad to the UK. I can prove the dates when I earned it and that it was not in the UK. Would I need to declare that money in a future tax return? I intend to continue to work for the same international agency where I earned the money (in dollars).

Thanks

Do you mean that you will be transferring your savings to your UK bank account?

    You will have foreign income?

    Thanks for the reply

I do not know whether to call them savings, I guess they are. Some money I earned recently abroad. In the end I will need to transfer all my money to a UK bank account as I intend to stay long term. Some money I earned 2 years ago or so abroad.

I am making a clear distinction between money I earned abroad, when I did not have an address in the UK and future earnings when I will have an address in the UK but the earnings will still be from abroad.

Yes I will continue to work for the foreign company
  • Hi Peterdad,

You do not need to report overseas income earned whilst you were non-UK resident. Is it not relevant whether you have moved the money to the UK.

On the basis you didn't report it in the UK at the time of earning it I assume you were actually non-resident.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, it does, thanks. I needed to make clear in my mind the difference between money earned while being resident abroad and money earned while being resident in the UK even if it is from the same international agency!

You might want to consider when in the tax year you return, and how many days you have spent in the tax year up to that point.

Why is the employer not withholding UK PAYE on employment income earned when you resume UK residence?
