jbbonce.. BIL thinks I am nuts and should live on oven chips and burgers!! I don't think he had ever eaten a proper meal until he moved in with my sis!! After looking at it all day he is not wanting to cook it and eat it as well!! I don't want to go in and feel a right numpty having no idea what he is talking about.. besides which I HATE going in the butchers.. it smells.. (maybe I am nuts lol) I want to take him a list and say I want this please.. how much? write him a cheque and run!
Pobby thank you.. I'll have a look what is on offer and may get back to you.. and my children would never forgive me if I bought a rabbit.. we have 2 adorable pet ones.. it would be like eating a cat!! I am leaning heavily towards venison though.. so any ideas would be great!! Such as what and how to cook them.. it would go in the slowcooker as my oven will be full.. I have a double oven and end up cooking my mothers pork usually as she only has a small oven she can't fit everything in.
cazscoob.. that chicken sounds delicious.. I will ask him about that one! thank you!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

lol! Actually i'm scared of the butchers too. I went in one time and asked for some beef and he looked at me like i was a fool and told me they only sell pork. which is a lie because they sell honey as well.:j Baby bonce was born on Christmas morning after a ridiculously short labour and no pain relief! If only losing the baby weight was as easy!:T0 -
jb.. my small flumps are scared of him too.. but then I do tell them if they have outgrown their shoes too soon/before I can afford another pair I'll take them in and have their toes chopped off.. Maybe that is the problem?? And what kind of butchers only sells pork and honey!! Why does it not say 'pork shop' outside (as oppose to pork chop!) "Pork and Honey for your money".. that's daft!
Uncle Peter goes otu and 'collects' bunnies and goosey's and duckies and chookies and gobbler-gobblers and eggs.. which he sells in his shop as well as pigs and sheep and cows and reindeer and bambis and quail and rat-birds and other strange things that I'm not even sure what they are. All his burgers and sausages etc are made onsite too which is nice... apart from when he had DS1 doing them.. I didn't buy them then! I was a bit disappointed he didn't do pork burgers though.. I like those.
DS1 wants to go with venison as well.. and the other chillies will get what they are given.. my mother won't eat it but whatever is left I'll make into a casserole of some sort and [STRIKE]poison [/STRIKE] feed the children with it! Hubby isn't keen but he'll eat it.
Would a lump about 10lb be enough?? I am doinging an 8lb piece of pork as well.. for 10 of us..LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Rosy - a capon tastes much nicer than an ordinary chicken. I don't buy chicken off the shelf now (don't live near a good butcher). I buy from Tesco butcher a bit more expensive but much more tasty. Last year's 10lb capon was just under £20 but I can remember when they were much cheaper :rotfl:
Slow cooked venison would be a good alternative. Rabbit is great but lots of little bones if you use the whole rabbit.
The problem nowadays is that nothing is special any more. In the old days (ha ha) you never saw turkey except for Christmas and now you can get it all the time. I don't like turkey it's too dry for my tastes however it is cooked but then I only like legs not breast.
Pigpen - whatever you do I'm sure you'll have a great if tiring Christmas.0 -

lol! I think i might use that as tactic in the future.
The shop is called (town name) butchers. I think they should rename it 'If you don't want pork, take a walk'. Actually, they don't just sell pork and honey, they also sell overpriced flapjack.:j Baby bonce was born on Christmas morning after a ridiculously short labour and no pain relief! I [STRIKE]My Mummy who is a chef[/STRIKE] usually do steak pie and a bird of some sort.
Steak pie can be done in the SC if you so wish, and frozen till needed. The way we do it (being Scottish and lazy) is to slowly cook the steak and what not on the hob (you can use the SC) and do the pastry separate. AND cheat too, buy a block of pre-made puff pastry, roll it out (keep it as cold as possible) cut it into person-portion sized squares and tap at the edges with the sharp blade of a knife (makes it rise like all those hot men I like). Oh and the kids love to use mini pasty cutters to make tiny pastry bites, which only take about 5mins at 180'c.
Venison is yummy (poor Bambi) and just about free from all the antibiotics and what not they give to cows and sheep. Unless it's farmed..
Anyway, I'm going for steak pie (as I just talked myself into it), a turkey breast (hubby is fond of it) and some of those tiny chickens that feed one person - petite something. Tasty and juicy. (poor chicken).
And guess hwo is cooking? Yep, my Mummy! LOL!0 -
