Play Station 2 or 3 - that is the question ...

My two grandsons want a Play Station 2 for Christmas - however I have read reports that it is:

a) Not that reliable
b) May be discontinued

My questions are:

Should I get a PS2, or go for the much more expensive PS3?

Whether I go for one or the other, does anyone know of any good deals to get either one of these consoles at a competitive price?

If they want a PS2 buy them a PS2 save the money.

The PS3 is the new all singing and dancing console, it has only been out a few months but has had price cuts due to it being expensive. they can play most PS2 games so there is no real reason to not buy them one other than the price is high.

It's only the 60GB version that has backwards compatibility and can play PS2 games.....the 40GB can't. AFAIK.

Any further views on the ins and outs of PS2 and PS3 welcome. In particular though I am wishing to know where to get a new one for a good price.

There has been a price drop receintly so good prices are few and far between you need to buy them as a bundle to make any saveings but without knowing what games your grand kids are in to you could get stuff they don't want so they don't work out good value.
