Self Employed Tax Return Query

Good evening,

Apologies in advance if I have posted in the wrong but - happy to delete and repost if necessary - but I am having a problem filing my SA for 17/18. Unfortunately I’m a complete dunce with respect to tax so that isn’t very good lol.

So basically I’m employed by an umbrella company who sort out my tax for that which is fine. However 2 years ago I did some self employed work and used an accountant. I don’t want to say too much but I didn’t think he was up to scratch (he made an error regarding my student loan which meant I was being chased and referred to a debt collector and he seemed to think it was funny but it wasn’t for me obviously). However worse was he was then far too familiar shall we say so he’s emailed some time ago asking to catch up so I can give him my salary and expenses etc. but quite frankly I never want to see him again. He is not professional and just want him out of my life. Also an important point is I am no longer doing that job and haven’t so I want to do my last tax return and just be employed the usual way and pay PAYE tax.

I’m trying to do my SA but for some reason it lists my 3 day jobs via PAYE but it doesn’t say anywhere I have been self employed whereas the last tax return should have said I’m still employed which my accountant did. Please can someone advise why this might have happened?

I hope this makes sense, I just want to resolve this without contacting him as I honestly never want to see or talk to him again ... well I hope I don’t have to lol!

Much appreciated and thanks in advance,

LB

  • It's worth having a quick call with HMRC, they were super helpful and sorted out my self assessment query
  • and.... be aware that you have until Jan 2019 to submit this return. Try and sort things out before Jan because the HMRC bunnies are super-busy then, but otherwise there is no need to panic about time.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Just tell the accountant you are doing it yourself this year so he is not needed.
If I understand you correctly when you start to fill out your self-assessment there is a section where you say if you were employed and how many jobs, and then if you are self-employed and how many jobs so you would indicate that you have had 1 self-employment in the last tax year. That will then open up that section to allow you to complete it.
As Greensmiff says HMRC are helpful if you need it and even their site can be quite helpful on each step.
  • Thanks all, I will call HMRC because as far as I can help it I don’t want to be in touch with my accountant. I know I’m being unprofessional in the sense that I should tell him but he’s acted very inappropriately and just don’t want any come back.

    Thanks all,

    LB
