What does a hard pull look like on your credit report?

I'm looking at my credit report on Noddle and I have a bunch of searches, mostly from companies I've never heard of and as far as I know I don't have any relationship with them. My latest one was from Capital One because I applied for a credit card with them.

Are all of these search hard pulls? Most are listed as General Insurance and Identification Check but aside from the Capital One, none of these were credit applications, so what are they?

Thanks.

Thanks but how will I know if one is a hard search or not? How does a hard pull differ from a soft pull on my report?
  • They are split under different tabs on Noddle with descriptions that state which tab is which

A 'soft' and 'hard' search are marked differently in the search section of your credit file. A credit application is clearly marked as one.

  • A "hard pull" generally shows up with the reason "Credit Checking Application, Account Application" etc

A "soft pull" generall shows up with the reason "Quotation, Identity Check, Insurance" etc.

This is a general rule of thumb and can vary between CRA.
  • The insurance searches are generic "soft" searches and won't be visible to lender, whilst "hard" applications are visible to any lender you authorise to look at your file.

Soft searches are typically labelled as identity check, product quotation, administration review, etc. Hard searches are typically labelled as credit application, current account application, etc.

The majority of soft searches come from comparison sites and eligibility checkers - often you agree to multiple follow up searches to offer up-to-date product recommendations if you subscribe for marketing updates.
