in Cutting tax
Hi all. In February 2018 I started doing self employed work, alongside my employed contract work. I’ve never ever been self employed before so never done a tax return. I registered as self employed, in August 2018.just received a letter from HMRC requesting a tax return for year April 2017- April 2018.is this right? As I only started self employed work in feb 2018, so was under the understanding I would need to just file my tax return for year 18-19?

Hi,
the tax year runs from 6th April 17 - 5th April 18, so you had a couple of months in 17/18 tax year.0 -
Could you explain why you thought your first return would be for 2018:19?
Is there something you're not getting across in your original post?0 -
What was your income for two months?
To others - I presume because a notice has been issued then if the amount is under the £1000 trading allowance, one is still obliged to file a return?0 -
No it makes sense. I am just dim, I perhaps thought that because I began in 2018, I would file for 2018-2019, forgetting that two months are part of the 2017 year. I will get an accountant to do it for me as I am daft with numbers.0
