Milton Keynes to Leicester

Trying to get a good deal on train fares to Leicester from Milton Keynes tomorrow, however despite splitting the tickets at Rugby and using my daughters 16 -26 railcard (she is travelling too) we can only seem to get a day return for £48.30 the pair. Seems somewhat pricey when tickets to London and Birmingham are much cheaper!
Can anyone suggest / find a cheaper route/ticket. I might have to drive I think.

I drove in the end, 1/3 of a tank of petrol in my little car approx £13 plus park and ride in Leicester £4. Far cheaper and less hassle than the train! Public Transport failed again!0
