Ha! Being a solicitor doesn't mean a thing. If it did, lawyers wouldn't end up in tribunals, and they do!

I'm not being cruel here, but not being able to manage on SSP is not a reason to return too work when you are suffering from serious conditions. It isn't the employers problem that you can't manager on SSP, but it is their problem if you return to work whilst not fit to do so. Honestly, with the best will in the world, I'd have to agree with any employer saying that! Hand on heart, given her condition as you described it here - would toy let someone that ill work??

Whatever is actually going on here, I don't doubt the emptier had done some things wrong. Whether that was deliberate or through ignorance though, the thing is that they could have put her through a capability hearing and dismissed her quite fairly I suspect. So even if she went to a tribunal, any award would have to take that into account. She probably wouldn't get much, and given the stress of a tribunal, without a union or a lawyer - well, to be honest, I wouldn't strongly suggest her going through one with a union or a lawyer unless she got a lot tougher. And if she's going to do that I think she has other battles to fight.

It's possible that she's owed some money. it's also possible that with a little help she might loosen the purse strings and get a little more. But... The starter had to be to actually know what happened, and right now you don't.
