I'd like to return a pair of trousers to River Island 33 days after purchasing them. The tags are still in tact but obviously the 28 day policy is no longer valid. Is there anything I'd be able to get out of trying, such as a voucher?

Why not just ask them?0

I work at Debenhams. If you go over 28 days, you can exchange for something of that amount or have the money on the gift card.
Sometimes we honour the refund if it’s close as many people say that you get a ‘month to change your mind’0 -

It's OK saying 'the tags are still intact' but you could have bought them from a charity shop.
With the receipt you'd have a better chance of getting something out of this change of mind but bear in mind that you have no rights at all in the circumstances so anything would be a gesture of goodwill.
The only way you'll know is to ask.0 -
Just ask them, apologise for returning them late.0
