Giving Notice Question

My notice period is 3 months.
As this is the minimum period, is there anything stopping me giving notice on, say, 17th September but requesting my employment cease on the 31st December rather than 16th December?
Reason I ask is that I will be on holiday on the 30th September and being employed for the full 12 months of 2018 will give me my full holiday entitlement.

Yes you can, I'm not sure it will be necessary. If you get bank holidays off, you will still have some allowance anyway due to the 3 in December. You'll not lose much by going early, so unless it aligned with another jobs starting on the 2nd Jan I wouldn't worry too much.
You don't 'request' when giving notice, you serve notice with an effective date.0 -

If 3 months notice is required but somebody tries to give more, as in the OP's situation, can the employer say "Thank you very much, we accept 3 months from the date you gave notice and goodbye then".0
