Been offer new job but not sure of what to do

Hi Everyone
I apologise in advance if this seems like a silly question, but I need some advice/opinion as I have been out of the job seeking market for some time.

Basically I have worked for the same company for over 20 years, but due to a takeover and potential relocation of the offices I have been looking for a new job. I have been offered a new job with a local company, they have sent me a a official offer letter detailing just the job title, annual salary and proposed start date. The offer expires in a couple of days and I am not sure what to do in terms of the job employment process. I really want to know more about the terms and conditions of the job like holidays, benefits, etc, but I guess that will be in the contract.

My question is, if I say yes to the job offer letter, am I legally bound to them if I change my mind a few days later, what I am trying to work out is at what point is no return, because I am guessing that until I get a contract from and sign it, I cannot hand in my notice with my current employer.

Hope that makes some sense.

Thanks

Write down a list of all the things you want to know.

Phone them up tomorrow, speak to HR and work your way through the list.

    Make your decision.

People often change their minds about new jobs, if you do, be polite and let them know. Be aware the new employer can withdraw their job offer too, and you will have little employment rights until you have worked there 2 years. But people move jobs all the time, so that shouldn't in itself put you off.

  • Hi that is really good advice, I do not want to mess them around, but also want to be sure that I have all the information to hand before agreeing to the offer. I was under the impression that even that if I accepted the offer, I could still back out until a contract had been signed between us, is that not correct, does anyone know?
    Thanks

You can back out of a job offer at any time before you start. You can also resign on the day you start or any day thereafter. My wife was in a similar situation. She had been for 2 interviews and hadn't heard back from the preferred one so accepted the 2nd choice. Literally the next day she got a phone call offering her the preferred job. She called the other company to apologise and tell them she wouldn't be starting after all. They actually appreciated that she had called them so quickly and they could look at alternatives.

Could the relocation result in redundancy?

Why did you not cover these crucial points at the interview(s).

Either call and ask or you could accept conditional on knowing the particulars.
Is their offer conditional, many are usually references.
  • I guess the relocation may result in redundancies, but the new owners have not even decided where it will move to, only that it is make or break by the end of this year. I covered many points during the interview and even did a test a few days later. They said they would send an offer letter confirming those points but some of the key ones are missing. I do not doubt that they are honest, but I would hate to accept and offer on the basis without checking all details of it and then handing in my notice only to find out I had agreed to something that was not in writing.
