Hi
Does anybody know if W H Smith had a pension fund available for it's retail staff in 1975 or perhaps shortly afterwards?
I know that:
In 1894 A superannuation Fund for clerical workers was founded
and
In 1895 A Pension Fund for manual workers was introduced
Both of the above are stated on the W H Smith website.
I will be contacting W H Smith but just wondered if anybody had any information.

An IFA would know, most of them have details of major company schemes supplied in the main from Insurers.
Or you could try ringing up N.P.I. they used to issue us with with such details. Dunno if NPI are still around though as i've been out of it all for some 5 yrs now.0 -
" It first became a legal requirement to provide a preserved pension, subject to certain conditions, from 6 April 1975. Many pension schemes did not provide any preserved pension for members who left before this date. Under contributory schemes members were given a refund of their own contributions when they left employment. In schemes that did not require member contributions there was usually no benefit at all on leaving service."
From the Pensions Advisory Service [TPAS] website
So if you're wondering if you may be owed a pension by WH Smith's pension scheme it may well depend on the dates you were employed by them and whether, if it was a contributory scheme, you were given a refund [less tax relief] when you left.
Smith's is the place to start I would have thought but if you need advice TPAS is an independent body which may be able to help.0 -
Hi Folks
Thank you for the information.0 -
I was with WHS up to 1979 and they did have a final salary scheme at that time. They paid in the same amount as your contribution:beer: .0
