UPDATE: Following our complaint all arrears have been cancelled and the default notice agreed for removal! Not sure why cancelling the DD is viewed as such a bad thing to do? I certainly think it would have been a lot more difficult to get a refund in this instance rather than a write off if we had continued paying.
Anyway, thanks for your help.
