Is Non-refundable deposit really non-refundable?

Hi
I recently paid a non-refundable deposit for a Master's programme at a University in the UK. However a few weeks later I was offered a job post for specialising and could not turn down, and it would not be possible to do the Master's alongside my job.
I contacted the Admissions team about refunding the deposit and their reply is given below:
"A deposit is required to secure a place on the course as suitable patients need to be identified and materials procured in advance of the course. This involves significant disbursements by the University which cannot be recouped if an applicant chooses not to attend after being offered a place. As the applicants for the course are practising in a professional capacity it is common for such applicants not to attend the course after receiving a place. Refunding course fees to applicants who choose not to attend the course would impact on the viability of the course."
I was wondering if there is anyway this can be challenged further to obtain a refund? and if it is possible a non-refundable deposit can be refunded.
Many Thanks
NT

Well if that is the agreement, terms and conditions or contract, why go ahead if you were not happy?
It’s your decision to pull out not theirs.0 -
There may be situations in which a non-refundable deposit is refunded, but I would expect that to be in wholly exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the university. I can't see your personal decision to take a job and pull out of the course falling into that category.0
