OH has been complaining about his back first thing in the morning. Its 10 years since we bought our bed, I am torn, do I buy a new bed or just replace the mattress? The bed base is quite thick wood under the mattress.........so firm enough. The mattress is one of those your turn round rather than turn over........what would you do?

  • If you’re happy with the bed then why change it - just get a new mattress. I do think that the ‘change your mattress every ten yesrs’ thing is an idea put forward by the industry to increase sales though.

My mattress was fairly new but was giving me backache, I invested in a memory foam mattress topper and it is fabulous. If you think your mattress is actually ok then you could try that.

  • Does your memory foam topper make you sweat? Its one of the reasons I have not gone for a topper before.
  • My brother had the same problem with his back as your OH csarina and he got a memory foam topper and got on so well with it that they have now got them on all of their beds and since it has been on the bed in the guest room I use when I stay I have slept really well and I'm pleased to say that it hasn't made me sweat, and they keep their house very warm.

If you don't like the idea of a memory foam topper, you can buy a feather mattress to go on top

I had one for years and I loved it, it eventually had to be thrown away though ( the feathers do break down) so eventually got a new mattress

This is what I had, not sure if they still sell them

  • Are you sure it's the bed that's causing the bad back? There are a myriad things it could be - and replacing the mattress is an expensive way of finding out it's not caused by the bed!!

A trip to a physio, who will assess and then (if appropriate) treat would be a lot cheaper. You don't need to go via your doctor - just ring up and make and appointment.

10 years is a long time for a mattress, so it's had a good innings. Replace it (not the bedstead) with another good quality mattress. John Lewis is our friend in these circumstances.

I hated the memory foam mattress I bought years ago, made me very sweaty and uncomfortable indeed. Maybe a topper will give the same problems?

A topper may be the easy route to try first before spending too much more money.
  • I don't find my mattress topper makes me hot and sweaty, but I am a bit of a chilly mortal, I feel the cold - might be different if you're someone who's normally hot in bed (no, not that sort of hot!)

  • It might not be the mattress. It could be any number of things...
  • As said previously it could be any numer of things, still I think investing in good sleep is never a bad investment. So i think it could be worth the shot.
