Hi, my partner has received a letter from pra group saying that on 24/07/2013 his account was assigned to them. After reading other posts on here we sent a prove it email to them. They have responded by email requesting his date of birth before they can look into it. Is this a usual request and should we give them it?

Up to him, but I would not advise giving them any further information they don’t already have.
They saw fit to think they had the right person previously, let them stew.

If he disputes the debt, then presumably it could be a case of one Mr Tatters being confused with another? If so, wouldn't supplying his DOB help to correct the error? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

No - not always. This could well be a phishing trip and so the OP is better off following sourcrates advice. Having sent a 'proveit letter' its up to the DCA to do just that. I certainly would not share personal data with anyone until they had proved to me they had a legal and/or legitimate right to ask. If PRA have the right paperwork, it will include the DOB of the original debtor -so there really is no reason for them to ask for it.0 -
Hi MrTatters and welcome to MSE,
I would agree not to send any personal details to them at this stage. Ask the DCA to provide the proof they have, to confirm the debt is yours. If they do this and the D.O.B is incorrect, then, at this point, you could send proof of your D.O.B to verify they have the wrong person.
If they fail to provide you with proof but continue to contact you then you can raise a complaint on the basis of harassment and escalate the matter to the Financial Ombudsman if necessary.
