Work welfare visit

Hi, I'm off work at the moment with depression, I've been off 2 weeks so far, the first week was self signed and this week is start of my doctors note, he has signed me off for 21 days, on the 7th day I was off my employer e-mailed asking to do a welfare visit. Can she do this? It certainly isn't to see how I'm doing , she has said shes sorry im unfit for work, but not once said sorry your feeling unwell. I don't want to see anyone at the moment, never mind my boss. Please help :(

She can ask ofcourse. You can refuse.

If this leads to activation of any sickness management policy is ofcourse up to them.
  • Hi Comms, its partly work thats added to my illness, and she isn't the nicest of people, her nickname is sargeant major ( she told me that ). I have asked her what it would entail but had no reply, so I'm left waiting, and feeling anxious. Thanks for your reply.

Sure I understand. But if work is the issue, now is the time to look for something new.

Just for avoidance of doubt; there are ONLY 2 reasons someone can enter your house ( legally anyway ), you invite them or they get a warrant; and the latter doesn’t apply in this case.
  • I have been applying for jobs, as I need to get out of this one. And your right, I feel I've been bullied enough, so time to say no I think. Im a cleaner so my job definately isn't high flying but being made to feel worthless whilst doing it has knocked me for six, bug time. Thankyou x

I was recently in your position. I too was very unhappy at work due to a manager who was a complete bully and put me down at every opportunity. I also self certified and was then signed off for 3 weeks. I used that time to apply for jobs, was offered one and never returned to the original place.
Had I been told I were to receive a welfare visit I would have refused. My home is my safe place, so no way would I have allowed the cause of my misery in!
It's not right that you should be forced into leaving but if you don't, do you realistically think anything will change? I'd look for another job. You could buy time by agreeing to a welfare check via phone or at a public place. Good luck.
  • I'm sorry to hear this happened to you to, its just a horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach isn't it. I wrote an e-mail explaing how I'd been treated, to which she replied " rather than read what you wrote, come into the office" . If she'd of been bothered yo read it she would of seen I'm in no git state to travel there. Only when she thought I was going to put in a grievance did she call me, I didn't answer. Did you work your notice, as even that is making me anxiuos, I've never walked out of a job before but I'm Stoll worrying about doing that xx
