Bl***y basic bank account!

Just been in to the co-op to open a basic account. I can’t open one with anyone else as I have debts with most banks!

I’ve not even pushed the BR button yet but the ‘decision has been referred’.

Why?? I don’t want to borrow any money!!

I’m panicking now. My current account is with Barclays and I’ve missed a Barclaycard payment and I’m worried when my wages go in next week they’ll be snatched by Barclays.

I also need to get my photo ID sorted before they’ll even finished the application - passport expired few months ago and driving licence has old address on 😩.

How likely is it Barclays could just take the CC payment from my wages?

Anyone else had problems opening an account with the Co-op?

  • Sorry I should add that the decision was referred after the credit check. Don’t co-op pretty much guarantee you can get a basic account as long as you have the correct ID etc?

Your wages - can you ask payroll to hold your payment (tell them a bank 'switch' has gone pear-shaped…)or pay to a relatives account?
For a basic account, the bank usually only does an ID check rather than credit check - clueless bank staff as usual :(
Alternatively get to the ATM and remove as much salary on your debit card as you can as soon as it hits the account - that's what I did, then when the bank opened I took out the rest of it as soon as they opened as the ATMs inside the branch have a larger limit.
Barlcays bank and Barclay Card are technically 2 different organisations/businesses - hopefully you can avoid offset. If it was an OD then you'd be stuffed but if its the CC you might get past it.
Its important to then declare it as 'cash in hand' on the BR forms (if that bit exists on the new e-forms)
  • Try not to worry co-op tend to refer mosty account applications for some time now...you'll hear all is well from them in a few days

Hi, they took my last 19 pounds before, i was on benefits at the time, the law was always there to offset money in one account to pay a debt off with the same bank, but they dont like to use it i was told.

I when in after about hour on the phone trying to sort it out and they paid it back in my account then and there.

Not sure whats its like now
  • My husband went to Monzo - they don't do a credit check at all, just an ID check, and he passed OK.

Note that it is a phone app only, so you need a reasonably up to date Android or iPhone.
  • From other posts I've read, the Monzo app is meant to be a really good tool to use for budgeting...:)

  • Thanks for all your replies.

I can’t have my wages paid elsewhere as all my direct debits come out of that account on payday.

I thought the credit check thing was odd as I know lots of people use the co-op after being declared BR and are fine!

The photo id thing is giving me a headache. Can’t update my driving license online as passport is out of date. Got to do it by post arrrggh!

Oh well it is what it is I guess!

I’m not pushing the BR button just yet as need to save for fees etc. I think I’ll allow all my DDs to come out next week then withdraw what I can and pay in to new account soon as it’s opened - all being well!

What happens with online accounts etc? How do you deposit money?

Monzo - How do I add money to my Monzo account?
