Thank you gift ideas

I've been living in my FIL's house with DP for the past 2.5 years whilst I've been saving to buy my own house.

Long story as to how I ended up here and why I've saved for a house and not WE (me and DP).

Anyway, I am in the process of buying my house now, mortgage has been approved and now waiting on exchange and completion. I'm looking for an idea of a gift to say thanks to FIL for letting me stay in his house. All of my savings will be going into the house either in the form of deposit, fees or furniture so I can't really afford to buy something or at least not something expensive :o
Doesn't need to be a big, grand gesture as the family aren't really about that. But I would like to do something, or something thoughtful that shows he knows I've appreciated his help and letting me stay here.

I think he may appreciate a meal at your new home, I am sure that he will miss you both, so knowing that he is welcome would be a lovely gesture.

Good luck with your move, exciting:D

  • We put together a hamper for my in-laws as a gift last year and they loved it. It was nothing expensive but favorite snacks and food items, all of which we bought from supermarkets and b&m. I think it was well received as we paid attention and listened to the things they liked.

I have also previously given vouchers to favorite restaurants and experience day vouchers (loads of groupon) that have been a hit.

  • As an oldie, I can tell you that what older people love most of all is the gift of your time. How about e.g. a book of monthly afternoon tea/ lunch vouchers, nicely printed if you have access to a printer? He's bound to know that money will be tight, but the fact you've been able to stay there indicates he's fond of you, and my guess and suggestion is a lovely thank you card and invitations via the book of vouchers so that he has the pleasure of looking forward to seeing you - and enjoying a cuppa / meal as a bonus :)
