Child Tac Credit Query

Hi there
I'm not sure if anyone can answer this one. I'm currently paying back child tax credits and have been for the last year and I'm not actually sure if I should be.
At the time I was claiming them I had had a particularly lousy time and was a single parent living with my elderly parents, I wasn't working at the time. My partner who back then I had only been seeing a short time (and not the father of my child) moved in as he'd just given up his property so my mum asked him if he wanted to move in as a temporary measure. He never supported me financially and within a few months he was made redundant! Shortly after this I got a nasty letter from Concentrix saying they knew my partner lived with me and I had to basically pay it all back.
It really stressed me out at the time as I would never claim for money if I wasn't entitled to it. I quickly arranged for it to be paid back as I didn't want to be in any trouble! My parents and partner have always said they didn't think I should be paying it back as I hadn't done anything wrong esp as I wasn't being financially supported.
The more I think about it the more angry I get as I do feel I'm paying something back that I shouldn't be, but I can't find any info anywhere that tells me where I stand in that particular situation. Obviously if I am meant to be paying it back then so be it but it is niggling at me and I feel I need to get an answer.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

You will be completely liable to pay them back because he was living with you as a partner even if he wasn’t supportung you financially. Even while he was out of work and had no income, if you didn’t inform HMRC of the change in your circumstances you were not technically entitled to the tax credits0
