marzipan - making petit fours?

Hello,

I am thinking of making some petit fours - marzipan fruits - for christmas pressies as they are my dads favourite. I used to buy him some lovely ones in holland and bring them over for him, and they werent too dear. However i saw some in a shop over here the other day and they were four quid for ten little marzipan fruits!!!

Has anyone tried making these? how did they turn out?

Also, can anyone advise me, is it worth trying to make your own marzipan, or is it just as economical to buy ready-made? Is there any difference in flavour?

And finally ... if I do buy ready made, does anyone have any recommendations for brands, or where to buy?

many thanks

FC xx

  • Never made petit fours, but they look like fun to do.

I always make my own marzipan. It's really easy, and tastes much better than shop bought (apart from the year when I had no almond essence - left it out - tasteless!).

I make marzipan fruits at christmas with the kids - I think home-made marzipan does taste nicer but its a whole lot quicker to buy it. Some of the supermarkets have deals on marzipan this time of year. An idea that I use is to use choc vermicelli for stalks.
