River island gift card £0.00 balence! Please help.

I got gifted a £40 River island gift card for a Christmas present in 2016 off my aunt, I was also there when she bought it and still have the receipt, however I completely forgot about it until now and have 3 months left to use it, I went on the ‘Check balance’ on riverisland and it says ‘ £0.00 Balance’ I have defiantly not spent it as it was in a sealed envelope with receipt , Is There anyway it can be wrong and there is £40 still on it?

It may have been given to you in December 2016, but when was it actually purchased? This will be from when it expires not from when you were made aware of it's existance.

I'd call up their head office, be nice and explain your upset and you've a better chance at them offering a good will guesture, but in reality if it's expired they would be in their rights to not do anything.

Maybe ask whomever bought it for you if they remember when it was purchased. River Island should be able to track it back but just in case there was an error or the card had not been credited correctly.

Supermarket gift cards can have their histories checked - how much on & off, on what dates.

Might be worth trying asking if they can check the card's history & if it turns out there was £40 that 'lapsed', asking if the store manager can do anything. (They might, especially if they thought you were going to spend that £40 there on the day.)

If you'd rather go through pretty much the same process without the face to face bit, by all means email customer services and ask for help.

    The website is pretty clear:
Gift Cards with a zero balance will expire after 30 days.
Gift Card balance can be checked in-store or at https://www.riverislandgiftcards.com
Gift Cards are valid for 5 years from the last credit, debit or balance enquiry transaction.
Gift Card balance can be checked in-store or at https://www.riverisland.com. If your Gift card expires with a balance remaining, you can call +44 (0) 344 576 6444 or email customer.services@river-island.com, and request for any balance that remained on expiry to be re-issued onto a new Gift Card, subject to routine security checks

    Can't hurt to try!
  • You have to look at the gift card terms and condition cause sure I had a gift card which was valid for 18mths but if you use it or get a balance in the first 12mths then it resets it. I remember a programme stating that sometime if a gift card is not used it can decrease due to charges taken off. Speak to river island resort this but if the money gone then I don't think they will recredit it so the money will be lost. I try to use my gift cards within 12mthz just in case.
